How can search the WHOIS database?

I'm trying to figure out how to investigate the WHOIS database to see that the number of names domain, and which, when a person or entity is registered? For example, I'm trying to figure out how many domain names are registered to John Doe. I would like access to the WHOIS database to search all sites that have John Doe register and list back to me. I know I can get into a website as www.OneMonthFree.com in a domain registration company such as GoDaddy and use their whois database to find the record of a specific domain, but there are about 59 million dollars. com site and I really I have less time. I want to reverse that process and research in the name or address or phone number or the search field of others. Naturally, I would like to search for free, but the pay sites are fine.
